I was constantly told as a child that I’m a good kid with the exception of my mouth!
I was sarcastic, I talked back to my parents and I often prided myself on speaking what ever entered my mind. Many thought it was awesome until I unleashed on them.
I did not have a filter and I could careless how damaging my words were.
The book of James in the Bible says our tongues are a fire, a world of unrighteousness. It’s set on fire by hell and it’s a deadly poison.
I didn’t realize it at the time, that satan was using me and still tries to use me to hurt, offend and cause divisions with my tongue.
Now that I’ve given my life to Jesus and have been set free from satan, I don’t have to give into him and say what ever he tries to plant in my mind. I have the power to choose my words, regardless of what I’m “feeling” in the moment.
I now choose to use words of love and encouragement, to build people up and not to tear them down. This is what I believe will help to unify and bring peace to our families, jobs, schools churches and nations.
I think we all should ask ourselves, “how am I going to use my words today to speak love that brings unity?” Or maybe we should take our mother’s advice and “if we can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all!”
