Letting Go of The False Self

Most people are not even aware that they have a false self! They believe everything they think, feel, and do, is coming form their true self of light-love-peace. Simply being aware of the false self, understanding how and why it was created, how it’s impacted our life and how to let go of it, is the beginning of freedom.

When we hear “die to yourself” that does not mean, putting others before yourself or surrendering your desires. It literally means, to be willing to give up the false self!

What is the false self? It’s a self centered, egotistical thought system, that we created to protect ourselves from fear. It’s also what we’ve depended on to bring us peace, joy and happiness. The false self never delivers any of these, but rather keeps us searching and never finding that peace that passes all understanding.

To begin the journey from darkness to light, from lies to truth, from false self to true self, we must identify 9 things about the false self.

  1. How was it made?
  2. How has it affected us?
  3. What are the consequences of trusting it?
  4. How have we tried to cope with those consequences?
  5. If we gave it a name what would it be?
  6. In what ways did it help us and we feel a sense of gratitude?
  7. Are we ready to let go of the false self?
  8. What will life be like without it?
  9. Make a comparison list of the true self and false self.

If we have any fear that we are still holding onto, repressing or suppressing, we won’t be willing to give up our evil little false self (fake protector) and therefore continue to hurt our true self, blocking our true identity of light, love and peace!

Letting Go of The False Self Worksheet

  1. What traumatic events/experiences caused me to create an egotistical mindset, believing I had to depend on myself?
  2. How has this affected me, my life and others?
  3. What were the consequences for having fear, an egotistical – self centered mindset and depending on the false self?
  4. How have I tried to cope with these consequences?
  5. If the egotistical mindset – false self – inner wounded child, had a name what would it be? (Sometimes naming it helps to separate from it.)
  6. In what ways did the false self help me and I’m grateful for that help?
  7. Am I ready to release the false self? Why or why not?
  8. What will life look like without the false self? How will I now handle fearful situations?
  9. Make a list your true self characteristics and a list of the false self characteristics, so that you can clearly see the difference and your identity will be secure in Christ.

When you truly let go of the false self you will awaken to what you really are and as a result, you will naturally walk in spirit and truth! This is the Kingdom of God within you; Righteousness, Peace and Joy.
