Christmas Redefined

As a child, Christmas was an extraordinary time of year, as my mom made sure to make it really special with; a living room filled with gifts, overflowing stockings of goodies hanging on the mantel and a delicious dinner, where the family would all come together and enjoy one another.

When I became a Christian as a teenager, Christmas took on the meaning of the celebration of Jesus Christ’s birth, in order for him to die for my sins. Which created a heart with immense gratitude.

As a parent myself, these two meanings; of the importance of making Christmas special for my kids on a very limited budget put a great deal of undo stress upon me. Along with now being a seasoned Christian, I took it upon myself to be the Protector of Christ-mas! Meaning I became very proactive, as I fought to keep Christ in Christmas, taking great offense to those who said “Happy Holidays,” along with all the commercialism of what I called pagan decorations of; Santa, Elves and Reindeer.

Needless to say, I wasn’t much fun to be around during December, and even began saying; “I hate the holiday season!”

Flash forward to the present moment; I’m now a grandparent, and making Christmas special for my grandchildren is different. I’ve realized it’s not how much is under the tree, but the special moments we have, playing next to the tree, while enjoying the wonder, amazement and anticipation in their eyes.

My money managing skills have improved greatly, as I now put money aside from each pay check for Christmas. Then when the holiday season comes around, I have the money to buy gifts and not stress. But the greatest change, has been within myself!

After 7 years of inner healing or what I like to call “Heart Surgery,” I’ve discovered my True Self and the Christ within me. Christmas has been completely redefined for me. It’s become a celebration of the Divine transformation that’s taken place within my heart – mind – life! I’ve never been so much in the Christmas Spirit, as I walk in the love/light/acceptance of it all; Merry Christmas – Happy Holidays – Santa – Gnomes – Elves etc.

Jesus says in A Course In Miracle; “The sign of Christmas is a start, a light in darkness. See the light not outside yourself, but shining in the heaven within and accept it as the sign the time of Christ has come!”

Christmas for me is the celebration of the joining of my heart and mind with Christ, the oneness that Jesus came to awaken us to. This holiday season has meant the most to me, as I often stop and gaze at the star upon the tree and know it represents; me – Gypsy Spirit who is free at last!

If this holiday season has been really hard and stressful for you, maybe spend a few moments and ponder the meaning you have been giving it, and choose to adopt a different meaning in your heart and mind.
