If you’re an American than chances are you have some sort of love affair with the donut. For most of us the donut brings back memories of feeling loved and community. My love affair started as a kid when my mom would bring home those Hostess Donettes, you know, the package of six? I loved to eat 3 and save the rest for later! One of the high lights of my childhood, was going to sleep overs and slumber parties, knowing I would wake up to a big box of donuts, the challenge was to claim my favorite, before someone else did.
As an adult I quickly learned that bringing donuts to different functions; work, church, and almost any social gathering gave me favor for the moment amongst my peers. My boyfriend (now husband) would demonstrate his love to me, by always stopping on our way to church at Winchell’s, to bless me with my favorite chocolate devils food cake. My mouth is drooling just thinking about it!
When we had kids, I passed those blessings on to my own children, searching the market high and low for the Hostess plain donuts that they absolutely loved. When my son got older, we would get up early on Saturdays, get a donut and head out on our garage sale spree! Now 10 years later I still am tempted on Saturday mornings to fulfill my sugar craving with a donut!
I can hear people right now saying “big deal, eat a donut if you want one!” And I don’t blame them, because they don’t look at a donut like I do. The donut to me is gluten that played a role in my leaky gut, it’s fried in oil which causes it turn into a carcinogen (cancer), the sugar feeds my cancer cells, they are filled with trans fats to raise my “bad” LDL cholesterol, that is linked to coronary heart disease, in which fatty plaques build up in the heart arteries, some times leading to a heart attack.
All that to say, I have goals, hopes and dreams. When I look at a donut, I see it hindering me from achieving those dreams and all God has for me. If I was to make a product that would reap havoc on a persons health, but one they would be emotionally attached to and would hand down to generations it would be the donut!
