This week a 28 year old person, entered a private Christian School in Nashville Tennessee, opened fire and killed 3 adults and 3 children. When we hear of yet another school shooting, our hearts and minds are flooded with feelings of fear, anger and often helplessness. Then we begin sharing our thoughts and feelings about why this happened and what needs to be done to remedy this on going problem.
According to CNN, this shooter was under care for an emotional disorder and had legally purchased the fire arms. Even though this was the case with this shooter, we typically take sides as to what the solution is to end these tragedies. One camp pushes for stricter gun laws, while the other camp pushes for affordable mental health care. Both of these solutions have merit and should definitely be examined and improved. But I think it’s time we start having another conversation as well which is; “What can I do right now to help?”
When someone comes to the point of taking another person’s life, they have been tormented in their mind for a very long time. Their painful experiences have created so much suffering, that an Egotistical Programmed Mind of Fear/Anger was sub-consciously created and they became a hostage to it. Having thoughts that blame others for their pain and then ultimately agreeing with those thoughts that someone needs to pay, a plan went into action to obtain guns and kill. What we need to do is to get to the root issue, which is their private hell.
As Ram Dass says; “I can do nothing for you but work on myself…. you can do nothing for me but work on yourself.
When we take responsibility to look within ourself and become aware of our own Egotistical Programmed Mind and then begin to dismantle it by; healing and removing the layers of our own pain/suffering – caused by fear and anger, we can ultimately create a safe space of stillness and peace. This healed place in our heart and mind, is now void of any judgment and empowers us to provide unconditional love and acceptance. Along with enabling us to have hard conversations, where we can seek to understand an individual and provide help, guidance and encouragement.
When someone knows and feels we are a safe place, they can open up about their private hell, healing can take place, lives can be transformed and ultimately saved.
This tragedy is a reminder that we all need to start living in awareness of our own Egotistical Programmed Mind, so that we can heal it and be that safe space for others to do the same.
